The Nigerian movie industry is set to bid farewell to one of its legendary figures as veteran actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, will be laid to rest on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Beckley Estate in Abule Egba, Lagos State.

The burial follows his death at the age of 70 on August 15, 2025, an event that left many of his fans, colleagues, and admirers across the country mourning the exit of a man widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most vibrant performers.

Chief Kanran, known for his versatility on screen and commanding presence in Yoruba movies, earned respect within the film industry for his ability to interpret diverse roles with depth and authenticity.

Over the years, he became a household name, leaving indelible marks in films where he portrayed kings, chiefs, and sometimes deeply comic or tragic characters that reflected the struggles and triumphs of everyday Nigerian life.

His passing has therefore sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans who fondly remember his impact on the screen and beyond.

According to an obituary released by his family, the wake-keep and an artistic night of tributes will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025.

The artistic night, scheduled for 8 p.m., is expected to attract filmmakers, actors, producers, and cultural enthusiasts who will gather to celebrate his life, share fond memories, and honor his contributions to Nigerian arts and culture. The burial service will follow the next day at Beckley Estate, Abule Egba, before interment.

Chief Kanran’s family, while announcing the burial rites, expressed gratitude for the support and prayers they have received since his passing, noting that his life was one of dedication to the movie industry and to those who looked up to him as a mentor.

For many, his death marks not just the loss of a talented actor, but also the end of an era that shaped Nollywood’s early years and influenced the present generation of performers.

Born in the 1950s, Olusegun Akinremi built a long and distinguished career, appearing in dozens of films that showcased Yoruba tradition, societal values, and the struggles of common people.

Beyond the movie screen, he was respected for mentoring young actors and his active involvement in cultural and artistic events in Lagos and across southwestern Nigeria.

His passing has also been described as a reminder of the need to celebrate Nollywood veterans while they are alive, as many have spent their lives contributing to Nigeria’s cultural identity with little recognition.

On social media, tributes have continued to pour in. Fans have shared clips of his past movies, while younger actors have described him as a role model whose passion for storytelling was inspiring.

“Chief Kanran’s legacy will live on in every performance he left behind and in the lives of those he guided,” one Nollywood producer remarked.

As preparations for his burial draw to a close, it is expected that the ceremonies will serve both as a solemn farewell and a celebration of a man who gave his best to the Nigerian film industry.

His memory will remain evergreen among Nollywood lovers, ensuring that even in death, Chief Kanran continues to inspire generations of storytellers and entertainers.
