United States authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down earlier this week in Utah.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect is 21-year-old Tyler Robinson from Utah. According to NBC News, the arrest was made after investigators gathered intelligence from multiple sources, including surveillance footage and witness statements. Five senior law enforcement officials confirmed Robinson’s identity before his detention.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, while speaking at a public debate at Utah Valley University. Authorities said the attacker fired a single round from a rooftop, striking Kirk in what they described as a “targeted assassination.”

The incident sent shockwaves through the conservative movement in the US, as Kirk had been a prominent political voice and founder of Turning Point USA, a youth-focused conservative organization.

In the aftermath of the shooting, President Donald Trump confirmed Robinson’s arrest during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday. “Investigators acted with a high degree of certainty in taking Tyler Robinson into custody,” Trump stated.

He went on to commend the coordinated efforts of Utah state officials, local police, and federal investigators.

“This is a tragic moment for America. Charlie was a patriot, a friend, and a fearless advocate for freedom. While nothing can bring him back, I am proud of the law enforcement agencies that moved quickly and decisively to apprehend the suspect,” Trump said.

Authorities have not released details regarding the motive of the suspect, but officials described the shooting as “well-planned” given the rooftop position of the gunman and the precision of the attack. FBI agents are working alongside Utah law enforcement to investigate Robinson’s background, including any possible links to extremist groups or prior threats made against Kirk.

The assassination has sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders, commentators, and members of the public. Flags across the United States were ordered to fly at half-staff following Trump’s directive in honor of Kirk’s memory.

Meanwhile, prominent figures across the political spectrum have expressed their grief and concern. British broadcaster Piers Morgan described the murder as “disgusting and heartbreaking,” while civil rights leaders called it a “dangerous threat to democracy.”

Kirk’s death also raised questions about security at public political events. Utah Valley University officials said they are reviewing security protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Students who witnessed the debate described the scene as “chaotic,” with panic breaking out immediately after the gunshot. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but Kirk was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities have assured the public that more details about Robinson’s motive and potential accomplices will be disclosed in the coming days.

For now, the arrest brings a measure of relief to Kirk’s supporters and family, though the pain of his loss continues to reverberate nationwide.
