Nigeria’s track star, Tobi Amusan, continued to impress at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, first securing her spot in the women’s 100m hurdles final with a commanding semifinal performance.
The 27-year-old clocked 12.36 seconds (-0.2) to finish ahead of the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, who ran 12.45 seconds, and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska, who crossed the line in 12.51 seconds. Her time was the fastest of all semifinalists, setting her up as a top contender for the gold medal.
In Monday’s final, Amusan ran a strong 12.29-second race, but narrowly missed out on the top podium spot. Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji claimed gold with a 12.24-second finish, setting a national record, while the USA’s Grace Stark took bronze in 12.34 seconds.
Despite a sluggish start, the Ijebu Ode native recovered swiftly, matching strides with Kambundji before the Swiss athlete edged ahead in a nail-biting finish, thrilling the audience.
Amusan’s silver medal marks her as the first Nigerian athlete to medal at the ongoing championships and further cements her reputation as Nigeria’s sprint queen and one of the world’s elite hurdlers.
