Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has admitted she isn’t entirely comfortable being crowned the “Queen of Afrobeats,” despite the admiration that comes with the title.
Speaking with Apple Music host Ebro, the award-winning singer explained that while she’s grateful for the recognition, she feels the label carries a weight she would rather not shoulder. According to her, there are many other talented women in the industry who equally deserve acknowledgment.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.
Savage further explained that the title doesn’t sit right with her personally. “I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble, and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”
Her comments highlight the humility that has defined much of her career, even as she continues to be celebrated as a trailblazer for women in Afrobeats.
