President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has embarked on a 10-day working vacation in Europe as part of his 2025 annual leave, the Presidency announced on Thursday.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President departed Abuja on September 4, 2025, and will spend his annual leave between France and the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria.
Onanuga stated, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today, September 4, to commence a working vacation in Europe, as part of his 2025 annual leave. The vacation will last 10 working days. President Tinubu will spend the period between France and the UK and then return to the country.”
The State House press release, dated September 4, 2025, and signed by Onanuga, emphasized that the President’s temporary absence from the country would not affect the day-to-day governance of Nigeria. Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with other senior government officials, will oversee state affairs and ensure continuity in the management of national business until President Tinubu’s return.
A working vacation, as outlined in the statement, allows the President to combine rest with strategic engagements, meetings, and other official interactions that may arise during his time abroad. Such trips are part of a broader protocol observed by heads of state to balance personal rest with ongoing responsibilities, ensuring that leadership duties are maintained even while away.
Government officials reassured Nigerians that all critical state operations would continue uninterrupted. Key decision-making and policy implementation remain under the supervision of Vice President Shettima, who has been actively involved in governance since assuming office alongside President Tinubu.
This arrangement ensures that any urgent matters or unforeseen developments will be addressed promptly without delay.
Analysts have noted that while annual leaves provide leaders an opportunity to recharge, working vacations are increasingly common in modern governance, particularly for nations with complex administrative structures like Nigeria.
Such arrangements enable leaders to maintain contact with global partners, review ongoing projects, and make high-level decisions remotely, all while taking necessary personal time.
The announcement comes amid ongoing national and international engagements for Nigeria, including economic initiatives, security strategies, and diplomatic relations.
By spending his annual leave in major European countries, President Tinubu is expected to balance relaxation with potential discussions on matters of interest to Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic agenda.
President Tinubu’s 10-day working vacation, set between France and the United Kingdom, underscores a structured approach to leadership that combines rest with responsibility. Nigerians can be assured that governance will continue seamlessly under Vice President Kashim Shettima and the cabinet, maintaining stability and continuity until the President resumes his official duties upon return.
