Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has publicly appealed to Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy, requesting a music collaboration rather than monetary support. The singer alleged that self-styled middlemen have been preventing him from securing a verse from the African Giant, following a previous gift of ₦20 million.
In a video shared on X on Tuesday, Portable recounted how he received the ₦20 million from Burna Boy after defeating Speed Darlington in a highly publicized competition. He explained the situation in detail, highlighting the challenges he faced with intermediaries trying to take a cut of the money.
“Burnaboy gave me N20m that time because I beat Speed Darlington, N10m first entered and they blocked my account and I used my woman’s account to collect it. The next morning another N10m entered and I have what I wanted to use it for. I took it and added money to buy car, they said they wanted to collect from it but I didn’t give anybody anything,” he said.
Portable further emphasized that his victory and efforts earned him the money directly from Burna Boy, and he appealed for fairness from those claiming to be middlemen.
“I was the one that fought, I won N50m for defeating Speed Darlington based on me being a winner, that’s why he gave me N20m but please I’m begging for verse. Now because I didn’t give some people out the money, they’re now blocking me from getting verse from Burna Boy calling themselves middlemen,” he lamented.
Addressing the intermediaries directly, Portable questioned their authority and motives. “Are you Burna Boy? Are you the one who gave birth to him or are you his father? Burna Boy gave me the money from his heart, and for you to link me to Burna, you said no. Carry me to go and greet Burna and appreciate him. Since all these days, you’re there asking for middleman money, it won’t be well with all of you,” he asserted.
In a separate video released the same day, Portable emphasized that while he appreciates the monetary gift, a feature with Burna Boy would have greater long-term value for his career. The singer expressed confidence that a collaboration would not only elevate his status in the industry but could also win them international recognition.
“Burna Boy gave me N20m, he get levels, normal normal on Apple Music he get level. Give me featuring, please tell Burna Boy to drop featuring. He dropped N20m but it has finished, I prefer that featuring. Help my life now, all my fans are asking for featuring. Feature me, we will win Grammy, it’s Mr Nigeria that’s talking now,” Portable pleaded.
Taking a jab at fellow Nigerian superstar Davido, Portable claimed that the Afrobeat icon had refused to collaborate with him. He then positioned Burna Boy as being on a higher pedestal and expressed his utmost respect for the African Giant.
“Davido refused to feature me. Burna Boy drop featuring, you’re bigger than Davido. Burna is the only one I respect,” he said, underscoring his desire for a professional partnership with Burna Boy over cash incentives.
Portable’s statements reflect the ongoing tension between artists, intermediaries, and the dynamics of collaboration in the Nigerian music industry. By making this appeal public, he has placed pressure on the alleged middlemen while also seeking to rally fan support for a potential collaboration with Burna Boy.
The singer’s insistence on prioritizing artistic collaboration over monetary gain demonstrates a strategic understanding of the industry’s long-term opportunities. Portable’s candid remarks, combined with his outspoken nature, continue to generate significant attention and discussion among fans and colleagues alike.
As the story unfolds, fans are eagerly awaiting a response from Burna Boy and whether the feature will materialize. Portable’s appeal underscores both the challenges and possibilities that artists face in navigating relationships and opportunities within the competitive landscape of Afrobeats.
