Nigeria celebrates a major milestone in its film industry with the release of the country’s first full-length 3D animated musical, Gammy & The Living Things, which debuted in cinemas Friday, September 5, 2025. The groundbreaking film comes from Utricle Studios, a production company dedicated to delivering world-class entertainment that highlights African stories and culture.

Accompanying the cinematic launch is the soundtrack album, Rites of Passage, produced by Uphorik Sounds. The 13-track album offers a unique audio journey that mirrors the film’s narrative, marking the first time a Nigerian animated feature has been released alongside its original soundtrack.

The story follows Gammy, a spirited Agama lizard, who leaves the calm of his rural home to explore the bustling, music-filled streets of Lagos. Alongside a loyal group of friends, Gammy navigates a vibrant adventure full of rhythm, personal challenges, and moments of redemption. The film combines captivating animation with music-driven storytelling to explore themes of friendship, resilience, and self-discovery.

Utricle Studios’ release underscores Nollywood’s growing capacity to produce globally competitive content while remaining deeply rooted in African culture. By merging cutting-edge animation with traditional storytelling, the studio delivers an experience that appeals to audiences both locally and internationally.

The film features an impressive lineup of African talent, including music legend Jude ‘MI’ Abaga, veteran actors Joke Silva, Bimbo Akintola, Segun Arinze, Pete Edochie, John Dumelo, and Sadiq Daba, alongside entertainers such as Bovi, Avril, Mazino Appeal, Ruby Gyang, Oluremi Olutimayin, and Lord Frank. Their performances bring the animated characters to life, adding depth and authenticity to the story.

The Rites of Passage soundtrack enhances the film’s emotional and narrative arc. From high-energy songs capturing the vibrancy of Lagos to soulful, reflective tracks that echo the characters’ journeys, the album provides a fully immersive experience for viewers, bridging animation and music in a way never seen before in Nigerian cinema.

With its debut Friday, Gammy & The Living Things sets a new standard for Nollywood animation, showcasing the potential of African stories on the global stage and inspiring a new generation of creators to explore bold, culturally rooted storytelling.
