Streaming now on YouTube, Chef Tolu tells the story of a housewife who decides it’s time to step out of her domestic routine and venture into the business world. Ambitious and determined, she dreams of building something of her own—but her husband is far from supportive. In fact, he actively undermines her efforts, creating a tense and dramatic dynamic that drives the film.

My Take

I genuinely enjoyed watching Chef Tolu, though my main gripe is its runtime. Clocking in at about two hours, I ended up watching it at 1.25x speed, which made it much more comfortable. Honestly, I considered trying 1.5x just to see how it would feel—just joking!

The storyline is engaging and, while somewhat familiar, it comes with a modern twist that makes it refreshing. The tension between the lead and her husband is central to the narrative. And speaking of the husband—his behavior? Absolutely terrible. The way he consistently sabotages his wife’s business ventures is unforgivable in my book. Am I overreacting? Possibly—but really, if someone goes that far to ruin your work, what else might they be capable of?

One recurring frustration I have with many Nigerian films is the expectation that women must always forgive, no matter how severe the offense. This trope appears here too, which slightly dulls the impact of the narrative, but it doesn’t ruin the overall experience.

On the positive side, the film is visually appealing. Most of the dialogue is in Yoruba, sprinkled with English, giving it authenticity while remaining accessible. The lead actress’s fashion choices are standout—she served elegance and style throughout, adding a touch of sophistication to the film.

Overall, Chef Tolu is an engaging watch with a relatable story for anyone juggling personal ambition with societal and familial expectations. Despite its flaws, it’s a film that will make you reflect, cheer for the protagonist, and maybe even rethink the dynamics in your own relationships.
