Veteran Nigerian musician Bright Chimezie has expressed concerns over the state of contemporary music in Nigeria, particularly pointing to the lack of meaningful lyrical content among today’s artistes.
According to him, while modern musicians have excelled in terms of rhythm, production, and overall musicality, many fail to embed messages that resonate with society or stand the test of time.
Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, Chimezie advised younger artistes to prioritize lyrics that convey impactful stories, lessons, or cultural narratives.
“Music is more profitable now than my time. The only problem I have with the present crops of artists is their lyrical content. In terms of rhythms and every other thing, they are doing quite okay,” he stated on Monday, September 8, 2025.
Chimezie reflected on his own career, noting that his songs from decades ago still hold meaning today. “Some of the things we [me and my contemporaries] sing stick. I remember I did ‘Respect Africa’ in 1984, that’s about 40 years ago.
But I can still watch what I did 40 years ago and be proud of my lyrics,” he added. He challenged younger artists to consider whether their music would still hold relevance 40 years from now and whether they would feel proud sharing it with their children.
The veteran singer emphasized that modern music is vibrant and commercially successful but urged artistes to focus on content that inspires, educates, and positively influences listeners. He believes that lyrical depth is what gives music lasting value beyond mere entertainment.
Chimezie’s reflections highlight a generational gap in Nigerian music, where technological advancements and trends have often taken precedence over message-driven artistry. He encouraged artistes to strike a balance between catchy rhythms and meaningful storytelling, reminding them that music has the power to shape culture and leave enduring legacies
In conclusion, Bright Chimezie’s message to the younger generation of Nigerian musicians is clear: while commercial success and appealing beats are important, embedding strong, thoughtful lyrics into songs ensures that music transcends time and continues to inspire future generations.
