Nollywood actor, Michael Ejoor, has bravely opened up about his long battle with depression, revealing how he survived multiple suicide attempts and found the courage to share his story publicly.

Speaking on the Jay On Air podcast on Friday, September 26, 2025, the actor recalled years of struggling with mental health issues, describing a lonely childhood overshadowed by feelings of rejection.

“Growing up, I was secluded. I thought everybody hated me. I even thought my dad hated me. I didn’t think anybody liked me. I didn’t think anything was going well for me,” Ejoor said. He explained that despite his parents’ efforts, he felt like a “terrible child” who lacked recognition and support, even while working in the film industry.

Ejoor revealed that he was diagnosed with clinical depression 14 years ago. According to him, the hardest part of his journey was not the challenges of Nollywood productions but the silent battles that came with public life and its expectations.

He shared one of his darkest experiences while living in the United Kingdom, where he once attempted suicide by stepping in front of a moving car. “I’m not proud of these things,” he admitted. “It’s not a badge of honour.”

Depression, he said, left him hopeless and without plans for the future. “I didn’t want to think about tomorrow. The worst question you could ask me was my five-year goal. I didn’t even want to be alive tomorrow,” he confessed.

After years of running from his diagnosis, Ejoor revealed that a close friend encouraged him to tell his story.

That decision marked a turning point. The overwhelming support and messages he received from fans and strangers alike convinced him that sharing his experience could help others facing similar struggles.

Opening up about depression, he admitted, was not easy. However, he stressed that it was necessary to show that even public figures who seem to have it all together are not immune to mental health battles. His story, he hopes, will inspire others to seek help, speak out, and find healing.

Ejoor’s candour adds to the growing conversation around mental health in Nigeria, where depression and suicide remain sensitive topics often clouded by stigma.

By revealing his struggles, the actor has joined other public figures using their platforms to encourage openness and empathy for those suffering in silence.

For Michael Ejoor, survival is not just about overcoming depression but about embracing vulnerability as a source of strength. His story serves as a reminder that reaching out, listening, and offering support can make all the difference for people facing life’s darkest battles.
