Veteran Yoruba actress Lola Idije has shared candid insights into the challenges of raising children as a single mother, highlighting the emotional, financial, and societal pressures that come with the role.

According to the actress, being a single parent is one of the toughest battles a woman can face, particularly in a society where support is limited and expectations are high. She explained that many people fail to understand the heavy responsibilities that fall on a single mother, from paying school fees to ensuring that daily meals are provided for her children.

“Being a single parent is not easy. People think it’s just about taking care of children, but it goes far beyond that. There are bills to pay, school fees to settle, and basic needs to provide for. Often, friends and relatives promise to help, but when the time comes, they don’t show up,” Lola Idije said.

The actress emphasised that women in such positions are often left to bear these burdens alone, yet they continue to find strength for the sake of their children. She described the resilience of single mothers as a testament to their determination and sacrifice, noting that despite the challenges, they remain committed to ensuring their children have a stable and nurturing upbringing.

Lola Idije also addressed the issue of how men approach women, particularly actresses. She expressed disappointment with men who are often unserious and sometimes treat relationships as a form of competition. “Some men even place bets on who can win a woman over. This is degrading and shows a lack of respect for women,” she said.

She further explained that actresses frequently face disrespect, with some men believing they can be “bought” with money. Lola noted that offers as low as ₦500,000 are sometimes presented, reflecting a mindset that she described as both hurtful and humiliating.

The actress urged women to exercise caution in trusting others, as betrayal often comes from people they expect to support them. “Women need to be careful about whom they trust. It’s better to remain guarded than to be misled by promises that won’t be fulfilled,” she advised.

Despite these obstacles, Lola Idije highlighted the unwavering determination of single mothers, emphasizing that their perseverance reflects both strength and sacrifice. She noted that while society frequently judges women harshly, particularly those in the entertainment industry, these women continue to push forward and overcome adversity.

“Life may not be easy for single mothers, but with faith, determination, and hard work, they can overcome even the toughest situations. Their commitment to their children is what keeps them going,” the actress added.

Lola concluded by reminding women that challenges are part of life, but resilience and dedication can help them navigate difficult circumstances successfully. Her reflections serve as a powerful reminder of the strength required to balance motherhood, societal expectations, and personal growth, and highlight the courage of women who continue to thrive despite adversity.
