Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has been ruled out of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday eight clash against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The Nigerian forward sustained an injury during the team’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda’s Amavubi on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The 26-year-old Galatasaray striker was forced off in the first half of the encounter and replaced by Cyriel Dessers. His absence immediately raised concerns over his fitness, with head coach Eric Chelle initially confirming that Osimhen would undergo assessment before the squad’s departure to South Africa.
On Sunday morning, Super Eagles media officer, Promise Efoghe, provided clarity, revealing that Osimhen experienced discomfort in his chin after waking up. Following medical advice, it was decided he would not travel with the team for Tuesday’s game at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. Instead, Osimhen will return to Turkey for further treatment under the supervision of Galatasaray’s medical staff.
“Osimhen will not be part of the squad traveling to South Africa. He complained of chin discomfort and the doctors advised he should be excused to return to his club for treatment,” Efoghe said in an official update.
The striker’s absence is a significant blow for Nigeria, given his influence and track record in World Cup qualifiers. Osimhen has been instrumental in the Super Eagles’ campaign, offering both goals and leadership up front.
His injury leaves coach Eric Chelle with the task of reshuffling his attack, with Cyriel Dessers, Paul Onuachu, and youngster Victor Boniface all possible options to spearhead the attack against the Bafana Bafana.
South Africa, who sit just behind Nigeria in the group standings, are expected to push strongly for a win in Bloemfontein, making the fixture a must-win for both sides.
The Super Eagles, buoyed by their narrow victory over Rwanda, will now need to rely on squad depth and tactical flexibility to secure maximum points without their star forward.
For Osimhen, the setback adds to a worrying pattern of injuries that have occasionally disrupted his international commitments. Nonetheless, Nigerian fans and Galatasaray supporters will hope the injury is minor and that he returns to action soon.
As the countdown to Tuesday’s clash continues, attention will focus on whether Nigeria’s alternative strike force can deliver in Osimhen’s absence. The Super Eagles still boast an array of attacking talent, but the challenge against Bafana Bafana promises to be a stern test of character and resilience.
