Nigerian music superstar, Tiwa Savage, has opened up about the emotional trauma she experienced following the leak of her private sex tape in 2021, dismissing viral claims that she deliberately released the video for attention or relevance.

During a recent interview with American radio station Hot 97, the Afrobeats queen addressed the backlash that followed the leak, emphasizing that she was the victim of an extortion attempt and not seeking sympathy.

“I was bashed for my sex video. Lot of people think I was just trying to get sympathy. Even people with platforms were quite horrible and blamed me,” Tiwa revealed on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

She further explained the misconceptions surrounding the incident, pointing out how critics failed to acknowledge her position as the victim.

“I don’t know how they couldn’t see me as the victim in this. They said I did it to be relevant. If I were doing that, I would’ve been intentional about it. I would have used better lighting, lingerie, and my facial expressions would have been on point,” she added, highlighting the absurdity of the accusations.

The singer’s candid reflections also touched on the broader impact of online harassment and public shaming, which she described as deeply painful. Following the viral leak, Tiwa Savage faced widespread criticism, with many questioning her character and personal choices.

Despite this, she maintained her dignity, refusing to comply with the blackmailer’s demands. “I refused to give in to extortion, and that decision unfortunately led to the video being made public. It was a very difficult period in my life,” she confessed.

Beyond addressing the scandal, Tiwa Savage used the platform to advocate for understanding and empathy, particularly for women who find themselves in vulnerable situations.

“People forget that privacy breaches can happen to anyone, and the victim shouldn’t be blamed. We must acknowledge the trauma and support those affected rather than attacking them,” she stated.

The singer also reflected on the resilience required to navigate her career in the public eye, noting that challenges such as this have shaped her perspective. “Being in the music industry comes with scrutiny, but personal attacks over private matters are unnecessary. It’s a lesson in strength and self-respect,” she remarked.

Tiwa Savage’s interview is part of an ongoing effort to reclaim her narrative and highlight the emotional toll of online exploitation. Her openness has resonated with fans worldwide, who applauded her courage in speaking out.

As one of Nigeria’s most influential Afrobeats artists, Tiwa Savage continues to set an example for how public figures can confront personal crises with honesty and resilience. By sharing her experience, she not only addresses the misconceptions surrounding the incident but also advocates for greater awareness about privacy, consent, and respect in the digital age.
