According to reports from US media, Redford died peacefully in his sleep early Tuesday morning at his home in Sundance, Utah. His longtime publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed the news, emphasizing that he was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.

“He will be missed greatly,” Berger stated, noting that the family requests privacy during this difficult period.

Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Redford’s journey in Hollywood began with small television appearances before he gained international recognition. His breakthrough came in 1969 when he starred alongside Paul Newman in the Western classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The film was a critical and commercial success, and it established Redford as one of Hollywood’s most charismatic leading men. Over the following decades, he appeared in numerous films that became cultural landmarks, including The Sting, All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa.

After spending more than two decades in front of the camera, Redford expanded his influence behind the scenes as a director and producer.

His directorial work earned him an Academy Award for Best Director, and his innovative vision led to the creation of the Sundance Film Festival. Founded in 1978, the festival has grown into a globally recognized platform for independent filmmakers, providing countless directors, actors, and writers the opportunity to showcase their work to international audiences.

Through Sundance, Redford’s impact on Hollywood extended far beyond his own performances, helping shape the careers of a new generation of storytellers.

In addition to his film career, Redford was a passionate environmental activist. He dedicated much of his life to preserving Utah’s landscapes and natural resources, advocating for sustainable practices and conservation efforts.

His work with environmental organizations highlighted his commitment to protecting the natural world, demonstrating that his influence was not limited to entertainment but also extended into meaningful social and ecological causes.

Redford’s six-decade career cemented him as one of the most influential figures in Hollywood. He was celebrated not only for his talent and versatility as an actor but also for his integrity, vision, and dedication to supporting creative voices through the Sundance Institute.

Colleagues and fans alike remember him as a pioneer who continuously pushed boundaries, whether on screen, behind the camera, or in his efforts to support independent cinema.

As news of his death spreads, tributes are pouring in from around the world. Actors, directors, and filmmakers have expressed their condolences, recalling Redford’s unparalleled contributions to film and his role as a mentor and inspiration to many.

His legacy will continue to live on through the movies he made, the filmmakers he supported, and the institutions he helped create.
