Heartbreak Drove Me to Get a Tattoo – Tiwa Savage

Nigerian music superstar, Tiwa Savage, has revealed how the pain of a heartbreaking relationship inspired her to get a tattoo.

 The award-winning singer opened up about the experience during an interview with media personality Katy Igwe, which was published on Monday, September 1, 2025.

The singer, popularly known for her chart-topping hits and vibrant stage performances, explained that she wanted her tattoo journey to be intimate and personal. Rather than walking into a public tattoo parlour, Savage decided to fly her tattoo artist from Los Angeles to her home in Lagos, where she felt more comfortable dealing with the physical and emotional pain.

“I flew in my tattoo artist from LA to Nigeria. And I did it [the tattoo] in my room. So I was in an environment where I was comfortable. When you are in a tattoo parlour sometimes, a lot of people are working and then you are going through that pain. I wanted to make sure that I was in a comfortable place,” Savage said.

According to her, the process was not only emotional but also physically demanding. She recalled how her tattoo artist was visibly worried about her well-being during the session. 

“My tattoo artist walked in and was like, ‘What are you doing?… Is that going to come off?’ He started tattooing my body, there was blood everywhere. So he was more concerned for me like, ‘What are you trying to do?’” she recounted.

Tiwa Savage revealed that the decision to ink her skin was directly connected to a period of emotional turmoil following a painful breakup.

 For her, the tattoo became a symbolic act of expression, a way of releasing the hurt she had bottled up inside. “I did that the tattoo from the pain I felt from a heartbreak. I just wanted to do something to scream,” she explained.

She went further to reflect on the toll her past relationship had taken on her, describing it as one of the most challenging periods of her life. “Last two years was a very hard time. The relationship I experienced was crazy. I’m so happy I’m out of that relationship,” she said.

Her revelation highlights how artists often channel personal struggles into bold expressions, whether through music, fashion, or body art. For Tiwa Savage, whose career has been defined by resilience and reinvention, the tattoo stands as a testament to her ability to transform pain into strength.
