Nigerian travel content creator Steve Ndukwu has sparked conversations online after expressing surprise at spotting a Tesla Cybertruck parked in a village in Ibadan.
Famous for showcasing cultures and destinations across different countries, Steve shared his amazement after encountering the futuristic electric vehicle in a rural community in southwestern Nigeria.
Taking to his verified X account @SteveNdukwu, he questioned the country’s obsession with luxury items in the face of poor infrastructure, erratic power supply, and underdeveloped amenities.
“Nigerians will import luxury before infrastructure. No stable electricity, no charging stations, terrible roads, but somehow a Cybertruck is chilling at a backyard in someone’s village in Ibadan. Priorities on premium madness 🤣,” he wrote.
The post quickly went viral, drawing a mix of agreement and debate from Nigerians online.
Reactions from Netizens
@compoundinnaira: “Maybe the guy has set up his own infrastructure? If someone can afford to bring this into Nigeria, they should be able to afford 20-30M for a good power wall and solar set up.”
@zubidavies: “If we don’t quickly jumpstart our economy and industrialise very quickly, exchange rate will never come down. Only up. Because we will keep importing not just luxury but basic needs as luxury. Emphasis on quickly because these countries are phasing out fossil powered vehicles and replacing them with EVs. Imagine they stop producing them (maybe not now) or they only produce them for export to countries that have delayed catching up. It’s scary.”
@yearnerweb3: “Is the guy that owns the cyber truck suppose to provide that infrastructure?”
@ahsam254: “This is an individuality problem. People are trying to make more money so that they can escape the real problems, which are bad leadership. Now, is he gonna drive around with his own charger or what?”
The Cybertruck sighting has reignited conversations about Nigeria’s economic choices, infrastructure gaps, and the place of luxury in a struggling society.
