Afrobeat singer, Omorinmade Kuti, popularly known as Made Kuti, has strongly reacted to an online critic who condemned his marriage to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, over their ethnic differences.

Made, who is the son of Femi Kuti and grandson of the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, tied the knot with Inedoye at a private civil wedding in Lagos in November 2023. The union, which brought together the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups, has since sparked reactions from certain individuals who accused him of “mixing blood.”

A particular critic on X (formerly Twitter), identified as @AdemolaOgudu, recently took a swipe at the musician, calling him a “foolish Yoruba man” for choosing to marry an Igbo woman. The derogatory comment quickly went viral, drawing attention to the persistent issue of ethnic prejudice in Nigeria.

Responding to the attack, Made Kuti dismissed such divisive sentiments, describing them as evidence of a slave mentality. He maintained that no ethnic group should be considered superior or inferior to another, stressing that Africans would only progress when united.

He wrote: “Believing ethnic superiority/inferiority is justifiable is slave mentality. Our people need to enlighten themselves with the history and knowledge left behind by Pan-Africanists like my great-grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, my grandfather Fela Kuti, Kwame Nkrumah, and Thomas Sankara.”

Made emphasized that his family’s legacy has always championed unity, freedom, and justice, adding that Africa cannot thrive if its people continue to hold on to tribal sentiments that divide rather than unite.

The singer’s marriage to Inedoye Onyenso, who is also musically inclined and has been supportive of his career, has been a subject of public interest since they tied the knot. Inedoye, during a past interview, revealed that she and Made had known each other for years, with their relationship blossoming from friendship into marriage.

Despite the criticism, many fans and well-wishers have continued to congratulate the couple, commending them for standing firm against societal stereotypes and promoting love beyond ethnic lines.

The attack against Made reflects a larger conversation about ethnic prejudices in Nigeria, a country often divided along tribal affiliations. However, his reaction has been praised by those who believe that the younger generation must take deliberate steps to break such barriers.

This is not the first time Made has spoken up about social and political issues. The singer, who released his debut album Forward in 2021, has often infused his music with themes of unity, resistance, and hope, much like his grandfather Fela did through Afrobeat.

By challenging his critics, Made Kuti reinforces his family’s long-standing reputation as voices against oppression, injustice, and division. His response signals his commitment not just to music but also to the broader Pan-African vision of unity across borders and cultures.

While some still hold on to outdated beliefs about ethnicity and marriage, Made Kuti’s stance shows a growing shift towards a generation that values love, equality, and collective progress above tribal sentiments.
