The Lagos State Government has issued a strong flood alert, urging residents in low-lying communities including Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to relocate without delay, as intensified rainfall continues to increase the risk of widespread flooding in Lagos.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the urgency of moving to safer ground, especially in vulnerable areas where heavy flooding is anticipated.

Those around the Ajilete axis of Lagos, that’s Ajegunle, they have to move,” Wahab warned. “Those around the coastline of Ikorodu; Majidun, have to move. Some areas around the Lekki corridor too — not all.”

He further identified Isheri in the OPIC area as another high-risk flood zone and urged residents there to be on heightened alert. However, Wahab reassured citizens in regions such as Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja, noting that those parts are generally safe from the current flood threats.

This fresh flood advisory in Lagos follows severe waterlogging and property damage caused by continuous rainfall from Sunday night through Monday, which left many areas submerged. Viral videos from affected neighborhoods revealed flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and halted commercial activities across Nigeria’s commercial capital.

According to Wahab, the Lagos flooding crisis is consistent with forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which had predicted that Lagos would receive significantly more rainfall in 2025 compared to previous years.

For those who stay in the lowland of Lagos, they have to move to the upland pending when the rain recedes,” Wahab advised.

He explained that as a coastal city, Lagos is inherently vulnerable to climate change and flash floods, but added that the state government is implementing strategic interventions to reduce the impact.

Lagos will be exposed to the vagaries of climate change, and that means Lagos will have flash flooding,” he said. “But as a state, we have to provide resilient infrastructure, and we have to tell our people to be responsible.

Wahab highlighted ongoing government efforts such as clearing drainage systems and expanding flood channels to manage excess water during torrential downpours.

We won’t tell Lagosians lies. If nature takes its course, what we can do is to mitigate its impact,” the commissioner affirmed.

While urging residents not to panic, Wahab emphasized the importance of community cooperation and adherence to safety guidelines, particularly in Lagos flood-prone areas.

He concluded by reiterating the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, stating that while the state is doing its part, citizens must act responsibly to minimize avoidable disasters.
