Kwam 1 Appointed Ambassador for Airport Security After Flight Ban Reduction

The Federal Government has announced that legendary Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as Kwam 1), will serve as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol. 

This development comes in the wake of his recent controversial encounter at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. 

The minister revealed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had decided to reduce Kwam 1’s flight ban from six months to one month, following public appeals and the artiste’s public apology.

According to Keyamo, the decision to engage Kwam 1 as an ambassador is aimed at using his influence to promote awareness and compliance with airport safety and security rules. 

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will lead the engagement process, collaborating with the music icon to educate travelers on proper conduct within airport environments.

“The NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward. Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” Keyamo’s statement read.

The minister explained that the clemency was granted on “compassionate grounds,” stressing that the government remains committed to upholding aviation safety regulations without compromise.

The incident that sparked the sanctions occurred on August 5, when Kwam 1 allegedly confronted airline staff and security personnel while attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos. 

Reports indicated that he was carrying a prohibited flask, which he claimed contained water for medical purposes, not alcohol as alleged. Witnesses accused him of spilling the contents on security staff and walking onto the tarmac, blocking the aircraft’s movement.

Following the incident, the NCAA placed him on a six-month no-fly list and lodged a criminal complaint with the police, citing violations of aviation safety rules. However, widespread appeals from Nigerians, alongside Kwam 1’s public expression of remorse, prompted the review of his sanctions.

Keyamo emphasised that while the reduction of the ban and the ambassadorial role show the government’s willingness to embrace corrective measures, any future breaches by Kwam 1 or others will be met with firm action.

The decision marks a shift in approach toward incorporating influential public figures in efforts to improve passenger behaviour at airports. Authorities hope that Kwam 1’s appointment will not only serve as a corrective step for him but also set a broader example for Nigerians about the importance of respecting aviation protocols.

With the new arrangement, Kwam 1 is expected to participate in public campaigns, media appearances, and educational outreach to promote orderly conduct, especially in high-traffic airport terminals across the country.
