Veteran Kannywood actor, Alhaji Mato Yakubu Nata’ala, has made a passionate appeal for financial assistance as he continues his battle with cancer, a condition he revealed has plagued him for nearly two years.

In a video that has circulated widely on social media, Nata’ala, who rose to fame through his role in the Dadin Kowa drama series on Arewa 24, disclosed that he has been undergoing treatment for about one year and seven months.

According to him, the journey has been physically, emotionally, and financially draining, despite the support he has received from colleagues, clerics, and friends within and outside the Kannywood industry.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, especially groups of clerics, the Arewa 24 team, and Kannywood Vanguard,” he said with visible emotion.

“I am calling on anyone I have wronged to please forgive me. I need help. I have to pay ₦250,000 every three weeks for an injection. Even the hospital bed costs ₦51,000. Please help me. May Allah help us all.”

The actor’s plea has triggered an outpour of sympathy from fans, colleagues, and the larger Hausa entertainment community. Many have taken to different platforms to call for urgent assistance, emphasizing his immense contributions to the growth of Kannywood and the entertainment culture in Northern Nigeria.

Mato Yakubu Nata’ala, who hails from Yobe State, is regarded as one of the pillars of Kannywood, having been part of the industry since the 1980s. In a 2021 interview with BBC Hausa, he narrated that he began acting in 1986 and, over the years, had written more scripts than he ever performed in as an actor. His versatility, storytelling talent, and passion for Hausa culture have earned him respect and admiration among peers and fans alike.

Beyond his career, Nata’ala is a family man, married to three wives and blessed with 10 children. His current health struggles, however, have taken a toll not just on his finances but also on his household. According to him, the mounting medical expenses have made it increasingly difficult to sustain treatment.

Industry watchers note that his situation highlights the challenges faced by many Nollywood and Kannywood veterans who, despite years of contribution, find themselves without adequate healthcare or social security support.

For many, the story of Nata’ala is not just about one man’s battle with cancer but also a reflection of the need for stronger support systems for entertainers in Nigeria.

Support groups, fans, and stakeholders within Kannywood are now calling for organized intervention to ensure he receives the necessary care. His case has also sparked renewed conversations around the welfare of artists who often give so much to entertain society but face neglect when health crises arise.

As his appeal continues to gain traction, many hope that generous Nigerians, public figures, and relevant government agencies will rally to support him.  For a man who has devoted decades to promoting Hausa culture and entertaining millions, the hope is that he will not have to fight this battle alone.
