Popular Nigerian music star Akande Abolore Adegbola Alexander, widely known as 9ice, has shocked fans and the internet with a bold revelation about his spiritual beliefs and the influence of music.

During a candid interview on The Nancy Isime Show, the "Gongo Aso" crooner opened up about his religious stance, declaring that he does not identify as a Christian or a Muslim. Instead, he embraces traditional African spirituality.

“Devil controls music. Devil is the choirmaster. I am not Christian, I’m not Muslim, I’m an herbalist. I tell people, and they run away from me. I’m African. That’s what I practice. I have found my own light in my own way,” 9ice stated.

The Afrobeat-influenced singer referenced the late music icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, noting how Fela used to visit the shrine of Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron, which many considered strange. According to 9ice, such spiritual journeys shaped Fela’s music and life, and he draws similar inspiration from African traditional beliefs.

He also shared a spiritual ideology that has guided his path, insisting that God would never communicate in a foreign tongue.

“God said, ‘I will never come to you in a different language from your people. You will understand later that this black continent is for black people, and we have our own messages,’” he said.

9ice's statement has sparked debate on Twitter (X) and other social media platforms, with many discussing the intersection of music, spirituality, and African identity. The Nigerian singer’s openness about practicing Ifá traditional religion highlights a growing trend of celebrities embracing their Yoruba heritage and African spirituality over imported religions.

This revelation adds a new dimension to 9ice’s image, reigniting conversations around cultural identity, religious beliefs in Nigeria, and the spiritual influence of African music.
