Twenty-one days after its premiere, Ireke: Rise of Maroons is making waves as a landmark film exploring the history of slavery. Directed by Emmy-award-winning journalist Gbolahan Peter Macjob, the film has sold out screenings at major cinemas, including Odeon Phoenix in Leicester, Vue International in Birmingham, Westfield, Lumiere Romford, and other locations across the United Kingdom.
Macjob has also confirmed that the film is being shown in cinemas across Canada, including at the Mercury Shopping Centre.
Since its debut on July 25, Macjob’s directorial debut has been praised for its unflinching portrayal of one of history’s darkest periods. The film does not shy away from depicting the brutal realities of slavery, while highlighting stories of resistance, defiance, and the resilience of the human spirit.
As the journalist-turned-filmmaker’s first feature, Ireke: Rise of Maroons blends grim and graphic realism with a bold, fresh perspective, presenting a compelling narrative that stands out in a genre often revisited but rarely explored with such courage and depth.
