Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the passing of veteran Yoruba actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran.
The news of his death was first announced on Friday by filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi through his Instagram page.
Reacting to the development, actor and filmmaker Femi Adebayo took to Instagram to express his shock and grief. He revealed that Chief Kanran had only just wrapped up his final role on one of his productions before his untimely demise.
“Still struggling to come to terms with the sudden passing of Chief Segun Kehinde AkinRemi @chiefkanran.
This loss is particularly overwhelming, as he had just concluded his last acting performance on one of my projects.
May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus, be with his family, and give them the strength to carry through this loss. Rest well, sir,” Femi wrote.
Chief Kanran was not only an actor but also a filmmaker and director. His passion for theatre began in childhood, where he participated in church plays during festive seasons such as Easter and Christmas. He later enrolled at the Centre for Cultural Studies (now the Department of Creative Arts) at the University of Lagos, before moving on to Obafemi Awolowo University, where he obtained a diploma in directing, acting, and film production.
After his studies, he hosted a TV programme on MTV Lagos before fully venturing into filmmaking.
Kanran officially began his professional career in 1975, when he played
Kurunmi in Ola Rotimi’s play of the same title. He later featured in the popular television drama Mirror in the Sun, which helped him make the transition from stage to screen. He also portrayed a businessman in the soap opera Images.
His big break came when he performed in Langbodo, Nigeria’s official drama entry at FESTAC ’77, held at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos. On television, he became well-known for his portrayal of Alaafin Kanran in a drama broadcast on Lagos Television on October 1, 1988.
Chief Kanran was renowned for his commanding presence on screen, often taking up roles as a wealthy man or authority figure in Yoruba films.
