Music artist and grandson of Afrobeat legend, Made Kuti, has revealed that his iconic grandfather, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, died poor despite making a lot of money during his lifetime.

Speaking on the popular Tea With Tay podcast hosted by actor Taymesan, Made gave a rare insight into the personal life and philosophy of the late Afrobeat pioneer. According to him, Fela’s deep generosity and commitment to his community played a significant role in his financial state before his death.

“He was broke. Fela died poor,” Made Kuti stated. “He had the kind of money that could have bought a whole street, but when he comes back from a show in Kalakuta, he will open a box of money and say anyone who needs it should take it.”

Fela’s home, the legendary Kalakuta Republic, was known for its open-door policy. Made explained that people from the street could freely walk into the house and even benefit from the resources Fela brought back from performances.

“It was an open house policy. Anybody could walk in and walk out at any time,” he said.

Beyond the financial aspect, Made also spoke about Fela’s strong ideals on equality. He recalled that Fela refused to allow his children to call him “dad” or “father,” insisting that they should be treated the same as everyone else in Kalakuta. “He didn’t want any preferential treatment for them. Everybody was equal in Kalakuta,” he explained.

The musician also touched on how Fela was perceived during his lifetime, noting that his grandfather was more appreciated abroad than in his home country. “During Fela’s lifetime, he was appreciated more internationally than he was locally,” Made said, reflecting the global reach and impact Fela had on music and activism.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, known for his unapologetic activism, unique sound, and outspoken criticism of military regimes, remains one of the most iconic figures in African music. However, his personal life and choices have continued to spark conversations years after his death.

Fela died on August 2, 1997, at the age of 58. He left behind a rich musical legacy and a family of talented musicians including Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, and now Made Kuti, who continue to push the boundaries of Afrobeat on the global stage.

Made’s comments have stirred renewed discussions about Fela’s lifestyle, the price of generosity, and the sacrifices made by public figures who choose principle over personal gain.

His revelations come at a time when the younger generation is rediscovering Fela's music and message, bringing a fresh perspective to the life and legacy of a man who gave everything for his people—including his wealth.
