A woman identified as Kofoworola Akanji has been granted bail by the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court sitting on Lagos Island after being accused of defaming popular Nollywood actress and businesswoman Lizzy Anjorin through posts made on Facebook.
The 37-year-old was brought before Magistrate Wahab Balogun by officers from the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, and charged with three offences: conspiracy, publication of false information, and defamation.
According to the police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent Haruna Ibrahim, the accused reportedly worked alongside unnamed bloggers to publish damaging content about the actress over a two-year period, spanning from 2023 to 2025.
The prosecution alleged that Akanji shared posts and manipulated images of the actress on her Facebook page in a manner aimed at damaging her public image. It was further claimed that the intention behind the posts was to attract online attention and derive personal financial gain from increased engagement.
ASP Ibrahim stated that the alleged offences contravene Sections 39, 57, and 150 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Akanji, however, pleaded not guilty during her arraignment. While the prosecution asked for her remand in custody, her lawyer appealed for her release on bail, arguing that the alleged offences were bailable.
After considering submissions from both sides, Magistrate Balogun granted bail in the sum of ₦100,000. The bail conditions include two sureties in the same amount, along with other stipulations to be fulfilled.
The court scheduled the commencement of trial for August 21, 2025.
