Legendary Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face or 2Baba, has hailed Burna Boy as the leading artist in the Nigerian music industry today.
The veteran singer, who has been a central figure in shaping the Afrobeats landscape for more than two decades, made this known during a recent interview with Urban FM, Enugu.
According to him, Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has not only distinguished himself musically but has also taken Nigerian music to a global stage with his consistency and originality.
“On a personal level, Burna Boy is my number one. Although I still have other artists that I admire. But personally, as an artist, Burna Boy is my number one right now. Among all the others I am referring to, he is the senior,” 2Face said.
He further noted that while there are many young and vibrant artists currently doing well in the industry, Burna Boy has proven himself to be the “senior” figure among his contemporaries. He added that there are upcoming stars who are steadily working their way to the same level of influence and success.
“There are still other ones that are coming up behind him that I see them going to the same level,” he said.
Burna Boy, who is often referred to as the "African Giant," has enjoyed massive global recognition in recent years. He has won a Grammy Award for his album Twice As Tall and continues to headline sold-out shows across the world.
With hit singles that top international charts, Burna Boy has become one of Africa’s most prominent musical exports.
His ability to blend Afro-fusion with reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop has set him apart from many, making him a household name not just in Nigeria but also across Europe, America, and beyond.
For many fans, 2Face’s statement reflects the reality of the industry where Burna Boy continues to dominate awards, streams, and international collaborations. In 2025 alone, Burna Boy made history by becoming the first African artiste with seven Billboard Hot 100 entries.
He also continues to feature prominently in global award nominations, including the AFRIMA Awards, where he stands alongside Davido, Shallipopi, and Tanzanian star Juma Jux.
2Face, who himself is one of the most respected pioneers of Afrobeats, rose to fame with his evergreen hit “African Queen.”
The song has remained one of Nigeria’s most celebrated tracks globally, and his career laid a foundation for the global rise of Afrobeats. For him to acknowledge Burna Boy as the “number one” artist at the moment underscores just how far the latter has come in reshaping the industry.
Many industry watchers believe that Burna Boy’s success has opened even more doors for other Nigerian artists to penetrate international markets. His artistry, stage presence, and authenticity have become benchmarks for the new generation of Afrobeats stars.
With 2Face’s endorsement, Burna Boy’s status as a leading force in the Nigerian and global music scene seems further solidified. As the industry continues to evolve, his journey is one that both fans and fellow musicians are closely following.
