In a landmark case in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a 37-year-old man, Nicholas Giroux, has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the brutal murder of 27-year-old Nigerian-American boxer Isaiah Olugbemi.

The sentence was handed down on Friday, August 29, 2025, by Judge Richard Trunnell after Giroux pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. The terms of the sentence will run consecutively, reflecting the severity of the crime.

Olugbemi, a rising star in amateur boxing and a devoted father, was gunned down on June 17, 2024, in Odenton, Maryland.

Prosecutors revealed that Giroux approached Olugbemi and shot him repeatedly until he collapsed, before firing three additional rounds and fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage captured the horrifying attack, and investigators later recovered 9mm shell casings from the location.

Authorities further disclosed that Giroux had previously confronted Olugbemi and a neighbor during a cookout while armed, indicating a premeditated pattern of aggression. Following the murder, Giroux confessed to the authorities and directed police to the murder weapon, providing key evidence that ensured the case moved swiftly to conviction.

State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess condemned the killing, describing it as “cruel and senseless.” She added, “The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of this Defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence. And to the family and friends of Mr. Olugbemi, I hope that today provides some sense of justice for this terrible ordeal.”

The prosecution team, led by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, worked closely with homicide detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department to meticulously build the case, relying on witness testimonies, surveillance footage, and physical evidence recovered at the scene.

The coordinated effort highlighted the effectiveness of the county’s criminal justice system in addressing violent crimes and ensuring accountability.

Olugbemi’s death sent shockwaves through both the local and international boxing communities. Many mourned the loss of a young athlete whose potential in the sport was widely recognized. Social media and news outlets reported an outpouring of grief, with fans and fellow athletes expressing their condolences to his family.

This verdict serves as a stern warning to those who might engage in violent and premeditated crimes, emphasizing that the judicial system will pursue justice regardless of the circumstances.

Nicholas Giroux’s life sentence, combined with the additional 20-year term, underscores the gravity with which courts treat cases involving the deliberate taking of human life.

As the community continues to grapple with the loss of a promising boxer and devoted father, the legal resolution provides a measure of closure to the grieving family. While nothing can undo the tragedy, the sentence reflects the commitment of law enforcement and the courts to uphold justice for victims of violent crime
