Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has given his blessing to gospel Afro-fusion artist Gaise Baba’s modern take on the classic hymn I Have Decided to Follow Jesus. The endorsement came during the church’s 73rd annual convention, drawing attention to the artist’s reimagined version of the timeless song.
While introducing the hymn to the congregation, Pastor Adeboye acknowledged the fresh spin Gaise Baba had given it.
“We are going to be singing a song that we used to sing when I was young and has now been made popular by somebody who, how would I call it, remodeled it,” he said.
“It’s a song that says I have decided to follow Jesus. You are going to sing it with total determination—let it be your song for the rest of your life.”
The approval comes on the heels of a heated online debate over Gaise Baba’s remix, featured in his track No Turning Back II. While the upbeat version has attracted millions of streams and widespread attention, it has also been criticised by some conservative Christians and gospel music scholars, who argue that turning a consecration hymn into what they termed a “club banger” diminishes its sacred essence.
Despite these criticisms, Pastor Adeboye’s choice to include the song during the convention’s worship session signals a strong vote of confidence from one of Nigeria’s most influential church leaders.
Gaise Baba’s interpretation blends Yoruba, English, and Pidgin into an energetic Afro-fusion sound that delivers a fresh yet worshipful feel.
The moment held extra meaning for the singer, as it happened to fall on his birthday. Taking to social media, he expressed his gratitude and described the experience as a divine gift.
“God crowned my birthday last night with a most AMAZING GIFT, to Him be ALL the Glory!!!!” he wrote.
