Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yul Edochie has issued a strong message to the Igbo community regarding the proper selection of traditional rulers.
Taking to his Instagram page, the actor criticized the increasing disregard for cultural heritage, urging his people to stop “messing up” their traditions. He emphasized that the process of choosing a traditional ruler should be spiritual, not political.
“A traditional ruler must be selected traditionally, not by election or the government,” he stated.
According to Yul, the method adopted by their forefathers involved the selection of a leader by the deity of the land, not through modern democratic systems or government influence.
He blamed the rising crime rate on the abandonment of indigenous practices in favor of Western norms. In his view, such a shift has led to the breakdown of values in society.
“We have now embraced too many of the white man’s ways and destroyed our society with it. That’s why there’s so much crime in our communities today,” he wrote.
The actor stressed the spiritual responsibility that comes with the traditional leadership role, saying, “A traditional ruler must be selected by the deity of the land. Then he will swear before the deity to uphold truth, unity and peace, and shun evil. Any day he goes against the oath, the deity will strike him down.”
Edochie added, “With that, he will never support evil, and he’ll fight evil with all his might.”
He concluded by calling for a cultural reset to restore the values that once defined Igbo society.
