President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London and oversee the repatriation of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.
Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in a London hospital after a prolonged battle with illness. His family confirmed the death in an official statement released the same day.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, issued a public statement on behalf of Tinubu, who expressed profound grief over Buhari’s passing, describing it as a significant national loss.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read in part. “President Buhari died today in London at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.”
Onanuga further noted that Tinubu has personally reached out to the Buhari family, offering his sympathies to former First Lady Aisha Buhari.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences,” Onanuga added.
Shettima’s mission to London underscores the government’s commitment to honoring Buhari’s legacy with dignity and ensuring a respectful return of his remains to Nigeria.
