The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has suspended Nollywood actress Shirley Igwe following accusations of physical assault on a film set.

The suspension comes after reports surfaced that the actress allegedly slapped a member of the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria (CDGN) during an ongoing movie production.

The incident, which has since sparked widespread attention in the industry, led to swift disciplinary action from the AGN.

In a statement released to its national and state chapter chairmen, the AGN declared Igwe's indefinite suspension pending the outcome of further investigations.

The Guild described her actions as “violence, and indiscipline actions capable of discrediting the acting profession,” emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated within Nollywood’s professional ranks.

“Members are hereby directed to refrain from participating in any film production involving her,” the AGN’s directive read, a strong indication that the Guild is taking the matter seriously and is determined to maintain discipline among its members.

While Shirley Igwe has not yet publicly responded to the allegations, the news of her suspension has sparked conversations across social media and among stakeholders in the film industry.

Many Nigerians expressed disappointment, especially given Igwe’s relatively clean reputation in the past and her contributions to Nollywood.

Others, however, applauded the AGN for acting swiftly, insisting that no actor or actress should be above the law or professional ethics.

Industry insiders have described the decision as a necessary step to maintain standards in Nollywood. “It’s unfortunate, but the Guild needs to show that actions have consequences,” said one producer who chose to remain anonymous. “These sets are workplaces, and everyone deserves to feel safe.”

This development also brings to light broader concerns about working conditions and professionalism in Nigeria’s film industry. Several guilds and unions in Nollywood have previously called for greater accountability and discipline among members. While the industry continues to grow in popularity and revenue, internal governance remains a major issue.

Some of Igwe’s fans, however, have called for a fair hearing, urging the AGN to ensure the investigation is unbiased. A user on social media wrote, “Let’s not crucify Shirley yet. Let the full facts come out before passing judgment.”

Meanwhile, the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria has yet to release an official statement, although sources say the crew member involved has reported the incident formally.

This isn’t the first time the AGN has taken disciplinary measures against actors for misconduct. Over the years, the Guild has issued suspensions and warnings to members who breached codes of conduct, signaling an ongoing effort to clean up the industry’s image and practices.

As the case unfolds, many are watching closely to see if Shirley Igwe will address the allegations publicly or issue an apology.

For now, she remains suspended from participating in any film projects under the AGN's jurisdiction  a move that could affect her career significantly if the suspension is upheld after investigation.
