Nollywood is heating up this July 2025 with an impressive slate of film and series releases across cinemas, YouTube, and streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video. From psychological thrillers to political dramas, coming-of-age tales, and experimental web series, the month is packed with stories that reflect the diversity and dynamism of Nigeria’s film industry.

One of the biggest titles leading the pack is Midnight in Shangisha. Written by Sola Osofisan and co-directed by Ben Chiadika and Osofisan, this thriller stars Sola Sobowale, Tina Mba, and Baaj Adebule. It follows a desperate job seeker who walks into a deadly setup believing he’s attending a job interview.

Instead, he is offered the role of a contract killer while his fiancée is taken hostage to force his compliance. The film hit cinemas nationwide on July 4 and is already sparking conversation.

Equally gripping is Her Excellency, a political drama centered around a First Lady obsessed with power. Directed by Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo Salami, the film stars an ensemble cast that includes Bimbo Ademoye, Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, and Sola Sobowale. It explores the dark underside of political ambition and the lengths people go to protect their image.

On the digital front, Salon 001, a web series created and produced by Bolu Essien and directed by Biodun Stephen, made its YouTube debut on July 4. Featuring Genoveva Umeh and Juliana Olayode, the series dives into the colorful and chaotic world of a Lagos salon and promises weekly episodes full of drama, friendship, and ambition.

Bimbo Ademoye also enters the production space with TBAF, a new YouTube series premiering July 4 on her official channel. Featuring Kunle Remi, Uzor Arukwe, and Deyemi Okanlawon, the show is expected to blend comedy and relationship dynamics.

Another standout is Out in the Darkness, a psychological drama written and directed by Sarah Kwaji. It follows Bolu, a young mother battling mental health challenges after childbirth.

As hallucinations blur her reality and doctors dismiss her struggles, Bolu descends into emotional turmoil. The film, starring Kehinde Bankole and Deyemi Okanlawon, was screened at the NollywoodWeek Film Festival and premiered in cinemas on July 4.

For streaming fans, The Lost Days debuts on Prime Video on July 11. Directed by Wingonia Ikpi and produced by Natives Filmworks, the film features Bimbo Manuel, Baaj Adebule, and Cynthia Clarke in a drama that explores memory, loss, and personal redemption.

Zikoko, known for its popular editorial series, takes a bold step into filmmaking with Zikoko Life, a three-part YouTube anthology launching July 12. Created by Anita E. Eboigbe and produced by Bluhouse Studios, the series adapts Zikoko’s Naira Life, Love Life, and Sex Life columns into standalone narratives. Themes of marriage, bodily autonomy, and mature love dominate the stories, which star Uzoamaka Power, Michelle Dede, and Caleb Richards.

Lowkey Adults, directed by Susan Pwajok and premiering July 12 on YouTube, targets young adults with a raw, emotional story about friendship, relationships, and self-discovery. With a cast led by Mallum Arik and Shamz Garuba, it represents a new wave of Gen Z-centered Nollywood content.

On Netflix, To Kill A Monkey premieres July 18. Created by Kemi Adetiba, this cybercrime thriller follows Efemini, a man forced into digital fraud by desperation. Starring William Benson, Stella Damasus, Bimbo Akintola, and Chidi Mokeme, the series explores morality, betrayal, and survival in a tech-driven underworld.

Also premiering July 18 in cinemas is Freedom Way, an action thriller from Blessing Uzzi, directed by Afolabi Olalekan. After winning the Special Jury Award at AFRIFF, the film starring Adebowale Adedayo and Teniola Aladese is expected to attract a big audience.

Finally, Ewo, featuring Bimbo Ademoye, Tina Mba, and Taiwo Hassan, rounds off the month’s cinema offerings. Produced by Bukana Motion Pictures and Riverside Productions, and distributed by Nile Entertainment, Ewo promises powerful storytelling and cultural depth.

From box office hits to indie web series, July 2025 underscores Nollywood’s evolution into a multifaceted industry driven by bold creators and compelling narratives. Whether you’re heading to the cinema or streaming from home, this month offers something for every viewer.
