Nigerian media personality IK Osakioduwa has shared the powerful story behind his decision to change his surname and the remarkable impact it had on his life.
Speaking on The Nancy Isime Show, IK recounted an experience from his youth that sparked deep personal reflection. During a visit to a military hospital in Ikeja with his father, who was then serving in the Nigerian Army, a routine name registration prompted him to question his identity.
At that point, he bore the surname Obiara, but something about that moment stayed with him. “I thought to myself, I’m almost a full-on adult. And I’m still saying I’m so-and-so’s son? That moment made me realise I needed to wake up and start building my own identity,” he said.
Inspired by the biblical story of Jacob’s transformation and name change, IK began researching the meaning behind his own name. That search led to a startling discovery: “I started researching my own name. Then, I discovered my surname is embedded in some deity somewhere. I’m like, what does that mean? No, I’m a Christian. So I was like, okay, I want a different name.”
Determined to make a change, he embarked on a four-year journey to convince his father to support the idea. Despite initial resistance, IK eventually gained his father's approval—thanks in part to quiet encouragement from his mother and persistent prayer.
The name he ultimately chose, Osakioduwa, holds deep meaning for him. “I know Osa is God. Ioduwa means God opens the door to wealth. Now, that’s a name,” he explained.
Reflecting on how the change influenced his journey, IK concluded: “That name literally changed my life. My door to wealth opened.”
