Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed how he recorded his very first song at the age of 13 using unconventional tools and inspiration from video games.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, the acclaimed ‘African Giant’ shared how he made music long before becoming a global sensation, using a radio, a tape, and beats from popular video games.

“The first song I ever recorded was by myself, you wouldn’t even believe this,” Burna Boy said. “I had a tape, a radio, and I had a tape recorder, whatever, and I would use the beat from video games and some shit.”

He went on to mention specific games that inspired his early recordings:

“So I used one from NBA Street, Volume II, I think, one from Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas, it was one of the GTAs, one of the early GTAs, I guess. So the first song I recorded was with that, playing that beat and then recording and then, yeah, that’s how it went. How old was I, man? I don’t know, man. I can’t remember. Yeah, around 13.”

Now 34, Burna Boy has risen to international acclaim, known for his distinct sound, powerful performances, and significant role in shaping the Afrobeats movement.

In a separate conversation, the singer also addressed a controversial comment he previously made about Afrobeats lacking substance. He offered an apology and explained that his perspective at the time lacked a full understanding of what the genre represented collectively for Nigerian and African music.
