Chief Owolabi Salis, a Nigerian-born lawyer and financial consultant, has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to travel to space aboard a Blue Origin flight.
The remarkable feat places Nigeria on the map in the realm of space exploration, as Salis joins a growing list of private citizens venturing beyond Earth’s atmosphere through commercial space programs.
The flight, operated by Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin, launched from its West Texas facility and followed a suborbital trajectory, allowing the crew to experience several minutes of weightlessness before returning safely to Earth.
Salis, who is also known for his philanthropic work and political aspirations in Nigeria, described the experience as “transformative and humbling.”
Speaking after his return, he said, “It was like touching the edge of creation. Being up there reminds you how small we are and how much we need to work together as one humanity.”
Salis, a native of Lagos, has long been an advocate for technological advancement and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
His journey to space is seen as not just a personal milestone but a symbolic breakthrough for Africans in the space and tech industry.
“This isn’t just about me,” he said. “It’s about what’s possible for young Africans. It’s a message to dream big, to aim beyond the skies.”
Blue Origin’s space tourism missions are designed to make space more accessible to civilians, and Salis' participation underscores the growing inclusivity in the global aerospace narrative.
The Nigerian government and various dignitaries have since congratulated Salis, calling his flight “a moment of pride” for the nation.
His successful journey adds to the momentum of space interest across Africa and is expected to inspire a new generation of innovators, scientists, and explorers on the continent.
