Edo State Governor, Monday OkpebholoPet, has issued a stern warning to Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cautioning him against visiting the state without prior notification. The governor emphasized that Obi’s security could not be guaranteed if he fails to inform the state government of his presence.
The warning was delivered on Friday, July 18, 2025, during a defection rally in Uromi, where Marcus Onobun, former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in the House of Representatives, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Okpebholo’s comments come nearly two weeks after Peter Obi visited Benin City and made a ₦15 million donation to the St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing.
In a video clip from the event, the Edo governor addressed Obi directly, stating:
> “The man wey say he no get shishi, I am sending a direct message to him: there is a new sheriff in town. He cannot come to Edo without telling me because his security will never be guaranteed. Whatever happens to him when he is in Edo State, he will take it. I am serious about it.”
Governor Okpebholo also questioned the source of Obi’s donation, referencing the former Anambra governor's famed frugality:
> “He came the other day and donated ₦15 million. Somebody wey say he no get shishi — where he get ₦15 million to donate to people? By the time he left, there was crisis. Three people died in Benin. So, for that reason, tell Obi he should not come to Edo without telling me,” he added.
The remarks have sparked discussions across political circles, with some interpreting the governor’s comments as a political power play in light of growing tensions ahead of the 2025 Edo governorship election.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to Edo State’s political landscape, particularly as Peter Obi remains a prominent opposition figure nationally, known for his growing support base and high-profile engagements.
