Former President Muhammadu Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura Garden Residence

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday in the garden of his private residence in Daura, Katsina State — the very spot where he often sat during his lifetime.

The solemn burial followed funeral prayers held at a helipad near his country home. Military pallbearers, accompanied by a full honour guard, wheeled Buhari’s flag-draped body to the graveside. A ceremonial gun salute was fired in honour of the former president and commander-in-chief.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, read Buhari’s official citation at the graveside before the interment.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, and Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, were among the dignitaries present at the funeral.

Earlier in the day, President Tinubu received Buhari’s remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina. He arrived from Abuja at 1:42 p.m., inspected a guard of honour, and welcomed the Nigerian Air Force plane carrying Buhari’s body, which touched down at 1:51 p.m.

Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. He served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023.
