Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Jota, have tragically died in a fatal car accident in Zamora, Spain. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 3, 2025, when their vehicle veered off the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria and burst into flames.
Local authorities reported that emergency services received distress calls around 12:30 a.m. Firefighters and medical teams arrived at the scene promptly but were unable to save the brothers, as the vehicle was already engulfed in fire. Both men were confirmed dead at the scene.
Jota, aged 28, had recently celebrated his wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 and was reportedly vacationing with his family in Spain. He had just concluded a stellar season with Liverpool FC, playing a key role in helping the club secure the 2024–25 Premier League title.
A fan favorite for both club and country, Jota made 49 appearances for the Portuguese national team, scoring 14 goals.
His brother, André Jota, 25, was also a professional footballer, representing Portuguese club Penafiel. Their deaths have left a deep void in the football community, with tributes pouring in from across the globe. Liverpool FC expressed “profound sadness” in an official statement, describing Diogo as “an exceptional talent and a beloved teammate.”
The Portuguese Football Federation also extended condolences to the Jota family, calling it a “dark day for Portuguese football.”
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but early reports suggest that the car may have lost control before catching fire.
The football world now mourns the loss of two rising stars whose lives and careers were abruptly cut short in a heartbreaking tragedy.
