Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has passed away at the age of 61. The iconic footballer, fondly called “Dodomayana” by fans and teammates, died on Thursday, July 3, 2025, following a prolonged illness that kept him away from public life for some time.
Rufai was widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced. He served as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles during a period often referred to as the golden era of Nigerian football. His influence between the sticks was instrumental in Nigeria’s rise to global recognition in the 1990s.
Over a career that spanned more than two decades, Rufai played club football in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
His international career was equally illustrious he featured in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and represented Nigeria at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, helping the team clinch the 1994 title in Tunisia.
More than just a goalkeeper, Rufai was a leader on and off the pitch. He was known for his calm demeanor, sharp reflexes, and the ability to command his defense with authority.
Even after retiring from active football, he remained close to the sport, mentoring young goalkeepers and occasionally contributing to sports discussions and analysis in Nigeria.
His death came on the same tragic day the football world also lost Liverpool and Portugal forward, Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain alongside his brother.
Tributes have poured in from former teammates, fans, and football bodies across the world, remembering Rufai not just for his achievements but also for his humility and passion for the game. The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to release a formal statement soon.
Peter Rufai’s legacy will forever remain etched in the history of Nigerian football. May his soul rest in peace.
