The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly backed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent warning to Labour Party chieftain and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him not to enter Edo State without obtaining proper security clearance. This endorsement was made by the state APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, during a political gathering on Saturday, July 20, 2025.

The event also marked the official unveiling of Joseph Ikpea and Omosede Igbinedion as the APC candidates for Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency, respectively. The state party leadership used the occasion to reinforce its commitment to the upcoming election campaigns and its confidence in having genuinely won the 2024 governorship election.

Tenebe reiterated the APC’s unwavering support for Governor Okpebholo’s directive to Peter Obi, emphasizing that the governor’s caution was rooted in past experiences and ongoing security concerns within the state.

According to Tenebe, “The party also believes that the governor was right warning Peter Obi to get security clearance before coming into the state because of the opinion people have about Obi in the state, especially when the last time he came here, three people were killed.”

The APC chairman’s remarks come amid increasing political tension and scrutiny of opposition activities in the state. The party is now aiming to strengthen its influence in Edo politics by aggressively campaigning for its candidates ahead of the next round of elections.

Speaking further on the party’s election strategy, Tenebe stated, “Now that we have our candidates, we will hit the ground running. We are going to campaign as if we have never won elections in this state. We want to let the people know that we actually won the last governorship election.”

The Edo APC's firm backing of Governor Okpebholo’s position on Peter Obi underscores the party's strategy to maintain a stronghold in the state and challenge the rising popularity of opposition figures like Obi. As the political landscape in Edo State continues to evolve, security concerns, campaign strategy, and political rhetoric are expected to dominate public discourse.

With high-profile candidates like Ikpea and Igbinedion leading the charge for the APC, the party is poised to intensify its grassroots mobilization and public engagement efforts in key constituencies across Edo State.
