Popular Nigerian rapper CDQ has revealed why he left a promising banking career to fully pursue his passion for music.
In a recent interview with The Echo Room, the Nowo Soke crooner shared that he initially ventured into banking to fulfil his late father’s dream. However, the reality of the job left him feeling empty, as he often found himself more interested in writing lyrics than actual banking duties.
“I quit my bank job. I couldn’t tell my mother or any family member then,” CDQ admitted. “I left the house and went to stay with Masterkraft in the studio. I told him banking isn’t my passion. I will probably just do it to make ends meet. But music is something that whether it gives me a return-back or not, I’m still happy doing it.”
The rapper recalled how music producer Masterkraft, who was also his close friend and housemate at the time, was taken aback when he abruptly resigned from his job. He had even been borrowing suits from Masterkraft to meet the dress code required for his banking role.
Determined to give music everything, CDQ told Masterkraft they should focus fully on creating and pushing their sound. He was confident they’d find success within six months. Fortunately, things moved faster than expected.
He recounted how their breakthrough came earlier than they anticipated, with a music deal that changed their lives and took them from humble beginnings to living in Lekki.
CDQ gained widespread recognition in 2016 with his hit single Indomie featuring Masterkraft and Olamide. A remix of the track, which included superstar Davido, propelled him further into the limelight.
For CDQ, the decision to abandon the banking world was risky—but it was a gamble that paid off.
