Abuja, Nigeria – July 16, 2025 — Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a resignation letter dated Monday, July 14, and addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Jada Ward 1, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate departure from the party he helped establish. The development was confirmed on Thursday, July 16, by one of his media aides.

> “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated in the letter.

> “It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he added, expressing his emotional connection to the PDP.

Atiku Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, pointed to the party’s deviation from its original principles as the key reason behind his decision.

> “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he explained.

> “I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

Despite his exit, Atiku expressed gratitude for his political journey within the PDP.

> “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future,” he said.

Atiku’s resignation comes amid ongoing opposition realignments aimed at presenting a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Sources close to the former VP reveal that he is playing a key role in a new opposition coalition, which has adopted the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for the 2027 elections.

With his departure, the PDP now faces renewed scrutiny over its internal unity, strategic direction, and electoral preparedness as Nigeria approaches another critical political transition.
