Nigerian filmmaker Adeoluwa Owu, popularly known as Captain Degzy, is set to captivate audiences again with the upcoming release of The Benefactor, an intense new drama that delves into issues of power, control, and the protection of predators within society.

The film, directed by Owu, will premiere exclusively in cinemas on August 8, 2025, and boasts a star-studded cast including Bimbo Ademoye, Kunle Remi, Akin Lewis, Bimbo Manuel, Aisha Lawal, Tobi Makinde, and Toluwani George.

This marks Owu’s second theatrical release in 2025, following the earlier success of Owambe Thieves, a heist comedy that grossed an impressive ₦205 million at the Nigerian box office. The Benefactor takes a much darker turn, signaling a creative shift for the director who is known for blending humor with action.

Owu, who currently holds the title of second highest-grossing director at the Nigerian box office, is shedding the genre of comic heists in favor of a sobering narrative about exploitation and the social systems that shield abusers. According to details shared by the production team, The Benefactor challenges institutional silence and the structures that enable predators to thrive unchecked.

“In The Benefactor, we’re trading the laughs for hard truths,” a source close to the production revealed. “It’s about power, manipulation, and those who use their influence to get away with harm — and the people who try to stop them.”

The story was crafted by Folakemi Bello, with the screenplay penned by Temilolu Fosudo. Bello also serves as co-producer alongside Adeoluwa Owu, ensuring the project remains rooted in a shared creative vision. The film is a collaboration between three production companies: Degzy Films, Reelhouse Productions, and Wolf Trybe Media. Distribution will be handled by Cinemax Distribution.

Set against a contemporary Nigerian backdrop, The Benefactor is expected to offer audiences both a gripping storyline and a bold social message. While exact plot details remain under wraps, the cast lineup has generated excitement among film lovers, especially with talents like Bimbo Ademoye and Kunle Remi taking on central roles. Their chemistry and range are expected to bring depth and emotional resonance to the challenging subject matter.

The film’s release is part of a growing trend in Nollywood where directors are choosing to tackle serious themes and controversial topics, reflecting the evolving expectations of Nigerian cinema-goers. With Owu’s rising profile and a track record of commercial and critical success, industry observers are eager to see how The Benefactor will perform at the box office.

Speaking on the film’s relevance, a crew member noted that “This is not just entertainment. It’s a necessary conversation. Adeoluwa is using his platform to highlight the silent battles many face, and he’s doing it with the power of film.”

As anticipation builds for the August 8 release, The Benefactor is being positioned as one of the most socially charged and potentially impactful Nollywood titles of the year.
