Veteran Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has spoken out about the disparities between Nollywood and Hollywood, expressing deep concern over the lack of a proper system in Nigeria’s film industry.

Taking to social media, the award-winning actress shared her experience of working in both industries, revealing that even with minimal participation in Hollywood, the benefits have far outweighed her decades-long career in Nollywood.

Omotola disclosed that despite spending over 30 years in Nollywood and participating in more than 310 film projects, she has not received any residual payments for her work. In stark contrast, she explained that in just four years of being involved in Hollywood, and after working on only two test projects, she already earns monthly residual income.

“Just 4 years in Hollywood. 2 test projects. Monthly residuals,” she wrote, highlighting the structured and sustainable model in the U.S. film industry.

Comparing that to her experience in Nigeria’s movie sector, she continued: “30 years in Nollywood. 310+ projects. No residuals.”

Omotola emphasized the urgent need for structural reform within Nollywood to ensure that actors are fairly compensated for their contributions and that the industry can evolve into a more sustainable and professionally rewarding space.

In her words, “Nollywood needs structure.”

Her statements have reignited discussions around the treatment of creative professionals in Nigeria and the absence of long-term compensation mechanisms such as royalties and residuals that are common in more established industries like Hollywood. As one of Nollywood’s most recognizable faces, Omotola’s remarks carry significant weight and are likely to spark further calls for reform within Africa’s largest film industry.
