Nigerian social critic and activist, VeryDarkMan, has taken aim at President Bola Tinubu over his reaction to the brutal killing of over 200 people in Benue State.

The tragic incident occurred in Yelwata community, Guma Local Government Area, where scores of residents were reportedly burnt alive during an attack by suspected herdsmen. The massacre has drawn international outrage, with Pope Leo being the first global figure to publicly condemn the act, describing it as a “terrible massacre” and calling for justice.

In the wake of the Pope’s remarks, President Tinubu issued a statement directing the Benue State government to begin a process of dialogue and reconciliation with the attackers — a move that sparked backlash across various quarters, including from VeryDarkMan.

Reacting to the president’s stance, VeryDarkMan criticised the call for negotiations, arguing that the attackers are far more powerful than the political establishment is willing to admit.

“You want to dialogue with those that are burning people alive, people with barbaric ways. This is to tell you that they are even bigger than the President. That’s just the truth. Don’t let anybody deceive you, and this is not anything about politics or wanting to say negative things about Tinubu’s regime, no. They are way bigger than him, bigger than APC, PDP, and everybody. They are way bigger,” he said in a video shared online.

He further questioned the silence and inaction of Nigeria’s security leadership, suggesting that intelligence agencies and the military are fully aware of the perpetrators’ activities.

“It will be clowning if the DG of DSS and IG of Police will tell me that they didn’t know what is going on or what has been going on in Benue. It will be clowning if the Chief of Defense Staff, Army Staff will tell me that they don’t know what is going on,” he said.

VeryDarkMan also claimed the national outrage only began after he shared video evidence of the massacre, lamenting the country’s desensitisation to such atrocities.

“A lot of you are used to the news of Benue killing. You are already used to the news and that’s what scares me most. The killing of 200 people just passed like that, it didn’t trend and no one talked about it. That’s why I went there, and now everyone is reacting.”

He detailed the gruesome nature of the attack, describing how the assailants entered the community with gallons of fuel and weapons, setting homes ablaze and gunning down victims.

“Did you know how those people entered that place? They came with gallons of fuel. When they open the door, they pour the fuel and light it up. So where did all those with gallons of fuel pass through? Not just that, they had AK’s (guns) with them,” he recounted.

Calling for self-defense, the activist urged Benue farmers to legally arm themselves, insisting that the situation had spiraled beyond the control of the government.

“It’s just about protest. Every farmer in Benue needs to go and get a gun with a license. It’s bigger than what the government can come and intervene at this point. Unless Benue people have what to protect themselves with, they can do nothing,” he concluded.
