Prominent Nigerian cleric and founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has issued a strong and controversial warning to bloggers and individuals on social media who post negative or critical comments about him or his church. In a fiery statement, the pastor made it clear that he would not tolerate what he perceives as disrespect or falsehood being spread about his ministry.
Speaking during a recent sermon, Pastor Ibiyeomie addressed what he sees as a growing trend of online users—particularly bloggers—circulating unfounded or malicious stories about him. He did not mince words in expressing his stance, saying, “Don’t carry news about me or my church. If not, I’ll arrest and lock you up.”
The outspoken pastor went on to reject the Christian principle of turning the other cheek when attacked or insulted. In his words, “I don’t believe in ‘slap me, I turn the other cheek’; I’ll fight you. My gospel is, before you slap me, I slap you.”
His statements have sparked a wave of reactions across social media, with many Nigerians debating the appropriateness of a religious leader making such aggressive remarks. While some defend Pastor Ibiyeomie’s right to protect his reputation and his ministry from defamation, others criticize his confrontational tone and view it as inconsistent with biblical teachings of forgiveness and humility.
The incident adds to a growing list of public comments made by Nigerian religious figures concerning the role of social media and the perceived attack on churches and pastors through digital platforms. Pastor Ibiyeomie's comments, however, stand out for their directness and the threat of legal action against those who fail to heed his warning.
As conversations continue online, it remains to be seen whether any legal steps will be taken against specific individuals, or if the pastor's remarks were simply meant as a strong deterrent against further criticism.
