The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service year of Instagram influencer Rita Ushie, popularly known as Raye, by two months, sparking outrage and debate across social media platforms.

The move comes in the wake of a viral video in which Raye openly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over what she described as worsening economic hardship and government insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

According to reports, the NYSC cited “misconduct” as the reason behind the disciplinary action. The corps noted that members are expected to maintain decorum and neutrality in political matters throughout their service year. However, many observers believe the punishment is politically motivated, with critics accusing the NYSC of stifling free speech.

Raye’s video, which garnered thousands of reactions online, saw her lamenting the sharp rise in food prices, fuel costs, and general living expenses. She passionately appealed to the government to address what she called a “crippling economic situation.”

In response to the NYSC’s action, supporters of the influencer have taken to various platforms to protest what they describe as a clampdown on youth expression. One user tweeted, “So NYSC is punishing a corps member for saying the truth? This country continues to silence those who speak up.”

Despite the backlash, NYSC has remained silent on whether the extension may be reversed or reviewed, leaving Raye to complete an additional two months of mandatory national service.

Her situation has now ignited broader conversations about freedom of speech, youth activism, and the responsibilities of corps members in Nigeria’s democracy.

As of press time, Raye has yet to make any public statement regarding the NYSC extension, but sources close to her say she remains defiant and committed to using her voice to highlight the country’s challenges.
