The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has given controversial singer Speed Darlington until Monday, June 2, to appear before investigators over his alleged admission of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
The move follows public outrage sparked by a viral video in which Darlington appeared to confess to the illegal act. The video, which surfaced on Tuesday, prompted swift responses from both the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and NAPTIP.
Due to jurisdictional limitations, the DSVA referred the case to NAPTIP for further investigation, as the specific location of the alleged incident could not be confirmed.
On Friday, NAPTIP issued a formal invitation for Darlington to appear at its Abuja headquarters. However, in a response shared by the agency via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the singer claimed the notice was too abrupt and asked to reschedule the meeting to June 26, citing prior commitments.
NAPTIP rejected the postponement request, noting that the invitation was sent on May 28, which provided sufficient time to comply. The agency emphasized that the matter is of “urgent national importance” and demanded Darlington’s physical presence at their Abuja office by 1:00 p.m. on Monday.
“The agency wishes to state that the invitation was sent to you on Wednesday, 28th May, 2025, giving you sufficient time to prepare and appear as indicated,” part of the statement read. “Moreover, the issue at hand is a matter of urgent National importance that requires an urgent response.”
NAPTIP warned that failure to comply would result in further legal action.
Amid growing backlash, Darlington has since retracted his previous statement, claiming it was entirely fabricated and not based on any real incident.
