Nigerian music star Mayorkun has opened up about his enduring relationship with Afrobeats superstar Davido, shedding light on the unique bond they share even years after his departure from Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). In a candid statement, Mayorkun revealed that Davido continues to support him financially and emotionally, underscoring the depth of their friendship and professional respect.
Mayorkun, who joined DMW in 2016 and quickly rose to fame with hits like “Mama” and “Che Che,” disclosed that his exit from the label was not only amicable but also part of Davido’s original plan for his signees. According to Mayorkun, Davido encouraged him and other artists to eventually branch out and create their own record labels after their contracts expired, fostering independence and growth within the Nigerian music industry.
“My contract expired in 2020, but it was kept secret until 2023 when people started asking about it,” Mayorkun shared. “It wasn’t difficult for me to leave DMW because it was part of Davido’s plan from the beginning. Davido’s plan was for me and the other signees he signed at that time to leave and start our own record labels after our contracts expired.”
Despite no longer being officially signed to DMW, Mayorkun emphasized that Davido’s support has never wavered. “Davido still sends me money and supports me despite the fact that I left his record label more than five years ago. He’s my mentor. Davido is the kind of person that when you have him in your life, you just know anything that needs money will be solved and you won’t have any issues,” he said.
Their creative partnership also remains strong, with Mayorkun revealing that they have about 50 unreleased songs together, including a recent recording in Ghana. This ongoing collaboration highlights the strength of their personal and professional relationship.
Mayorkun’s revelations paint a picture of Davido not just as a label boss, but as a genuine mentor and friend who prioritizes the growth and well-being of his artists. Their story sets a new standard for artist-label relationships in Nigeria, emphasizing mentorship, loyalty, and mutual respect. For fans and industry watchers alike, it’s a powerful reminder that true support can outlast contracts and continue to inspire long after the ink has dried.
