A fresh wave of conversation on men’s mental health is sweeping through Nigerian social media after Maje Ayida, the ex-husband of Toke Makinwa, opened up about his mental struggles following their divorce, while reality TV star Saga urged men not to suffer in silence.

Maje, a fitness coach and public figure, spoke recently during a church event in the UK, where he bared his soul about how his life spiraled after his separation from the media personality in 2016.

According to him, the scandal, coupled with the collapse of his marriage, drove him into a state of depression marked by insomnia, withdrawal, and financial loss.

He admitted he was overwhelmed with shame and lost touch with society, even finding it hard to get out of bed or remain focused at work.

He said he suffered in silence for nearly a year until he began to take deliberate steps to heal, including surrounding himself with supportive people and confronting his situation head-on.

At the same time, Big Brother Naija alum Saga added his voice to the growing awareness on the matter with a tweet advising men to care for their mental wellbeing. He wrote, “You’re not Superman. Check on your mind. Prioritize your peace. Do things that make you feel alive again.”

Saga’s tweet struck a chord, particularly with young men facing pressure to always appear strong. His call was a reminder that mental health struggles are not a sign of weakness, and that no one  man or woman  should be judged for needing help.

Together, Maje and Saga are helping to redefine the conversation around masculinity in Nigeria, where mental health has long been a taboo topic.

Their openness is encouraging other men to speak up, seek help, and understand that vulnerability is not a flaw but a path to healing.

In a society that often demands silence from men, these public figures are lighting a path toward empathy, courage, and emotional honesty.

Their stories are not just personal  they’re a necessary push towards normalizing therapy, conversation, and care for all, especially the men who feel forgotten in the struggle.
